Reporting to the Records & Information Coordinator, the Exhibit Custodian is responsible for all aspects of the exhibits at the Richmond RCMP Detachment.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Receives, checks, controls, maintains and ensures for the storage, disposition, security and movement of all exhibits for the Detachment.
  • Lifts, sorts, arranges and stores items, as required; ensures that exhibits are maintained in the condition received.
  • Maintains safe custody of the main exhibit room keys and ensures that all exhibits at all sites are safeguarded at all times.
  • Assists in arranging special security for large narcotic seizures and/or exhibits of high monetary value.
  • Assists in packing and shipping of drug exhibits.
  • Keeps up to date with Court activity pertaining to exhibits including pick up at Richmond and Vancouver courts and may give evidence in Court on continuity of exhibits.
  • Responds to enquiries from internal and external sources on matters related to the work.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of files, records, ledgers and reports related to the work.
  • Assists other staff in performing their duties.
  • Routine inventory for audits of exhibits and exhibit processes.
  • Performs other job related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of methods and procedures of receiving, recording, storing, controlling and safekeeping of police exhibits.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications, including but not limited to CPIC, PRIME, Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word and MS Excel).
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of detachment and RCMP policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of police terminology and reporting structure.
  • Knowledge of software and applications related to the work.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to interpret and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to internal and external inquiries.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and exercise considerable independence of judgment and action.
  • Precise and detail-oriented.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and push in excess of 10kg (23lbs) on a regular and/or repetitive basis.
  • Maintains confidentiality in providing accurate, factual information to others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by coursework in computer applications and programs such as CPIC, PRIME, Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent plus a minimum of over one year work experience preferably in clerical or warehousing in a law enforcement environment. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Certification in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is preferred.
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course is preferred.
  • Certification in Property Room Management is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia with a safe driving history.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an open environment. Constant periods of light physical effort, routine lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling weight greater than 10kgs, routine sustained mental concentration, manual dexterity and visual effort are required. The position is also responsible for the handling of biohazards, chemicals, firearms, chemically treated items and sharp objects.

The City of Richmond has a Covid-19 Vaccination Policy which requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination as of December 20th, 2021 as a condition of employment.
