Performs a wide range of electronic and electromechanical design, construction, advisory, and repair services for the faculty, instructors, graduate students, and support staff to support scientific research and teaching at the University.

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant science discipline and two years of post-secondary education or formal diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (Automation and Instrumentation option or Electrical Power and Industrial Control option).
  • In addition to formal education, identify the certification.
  • 4 years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.
  • Good knowledge of the theory and application of technical electronics mathematics.
  • Good knowledge of digital circuitry, digital logic design, and common logic families.
  • Good knowledge of analog circuitry (e.g., operational amplifiers, transistors, field effect transistors, power control circuits, voltage and current regulators).
  • Good knowledge of electronic research equipment and systems (e.g., radiation frequency systems, nuclear radiation detection and measurement systems, high vacuum systems, cryogenics, nuclear magnetic resonance systems, biological instrumentation).
  • Good knowledge of WorkSafeBC OHS regulation.
  • Ability to complete University laboratory safety training.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information orally and in writing.
  • Ability to solder on large and small components.
  • Ability to safely use common electronic test equipment (e.g., digital multimeters, counter timers, function generators, digital storage oscilloscopes, analog oscilloscopes).
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools in the fabrication of electronic apparatus.
  • Ability to perform calculation of fractions, roots, exponential, percentages, and basic trigonometric functions with accuracy.
  • Ability to write microprocessor machine language code using assembly language development systems.
  • Ability to draft electronic documentation (e.g., schematic diagrams, block diagrams, and
  • mechanical assembly drawing).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform board level repairs of computers.
  • Ability to assemble, install, and configure computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to use programming languages (i.e., C, SQL, Visual Basic) at an advanced level.
  • Ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications (i.e., Word, Access, Excel) at an intermediate level.
  • Ability to train students, faculty, and research groups in the operation of equipment and safety standards for experiments.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg.
  • Ability to travel periodically outside the lower mainland (i.e., travel within North America for training on the maintenance and repair of new instruments etc.).
